They were just words, written on water, but they meant so very much to him.

They were bits of his soul, traced with thought and care in ink on the pages. Sharing something like that is difficult even for those who are confident in their creations, and he just wasn't ready yet. And now they're gone.

I love the scene by the falls with the Japanese poet, who so gently leads Paterson to realize that just because the page is empty, just because his earlier works were lost, that there wasn't more poetry waiting to but written. That he's living an artistic life, whether he realizes it or not. That, just like so many of the writers and artists Paterson admires, he can be more than one thing. He can be a bus driver. AND a poet, too.
