Ambivalence, personified.
Here he is, just after arriving on the red carpet for "Hungry Hearts," and it's pretty clear he's trying to get his bearings. He's not smiling, not yet, but you can see the hint of it just starting to bloom in the tilt of his eyelids and the way he's got his lips pressed together; the smile lines at the corners of his mouth leading up over his upper lip and toward the edges of his nose are ever so slightly more pronounced than they would be if the muscles at the corners of his mouth were completely relaxed, and so is the divot of the scar under his lower lip. If he were on his way toward a frown I would expect his brows to be knitted, but, while there's a little bit of a rumple there, they're mostly relaxed.
Most of the photos I've seen of Adam at this event have this sense of ambivalence to them; he's smiling but there's a hunted look hovering about his eyes as he struggles to maintain a pleasant expression while being bombarded by the press.
This was the first time Adam had ever attended a red carpet premiere for one of his movies at a European film festival (his first appearance at Cannes wouldn't happen until 2016), so this was a real red letter day for him. To make the experience even more extraordinary, he won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor for his portrayal of Jude, and his co-star Alba Rohrwacher won her own Volpi Cup for Best Actress as Mina. It's actually the only award he's won at either Venice or Cannes... so far. I fully expect him to be in the running for another win at some point.
In an ironic twist, Adam was unable to receive his award in person; he had a very busy festival season that fall, promoting three movies ("Hungry Hearts," "While We're Young," and "This Is Where I Leave You'), and missed the closing ceremony in Venice because he needed to be in Toronto for the opening of Baumbach's "While We're Young."
It's almost like an ongoing joke that Adam was unable to be in Venice this year for the opening of "The Last Duel" due in part to conflicts with the filming of another project of Noah's, the adaptation of "White Noise.
I wasn't able to track down which photographer took the reference I used, but I know it was taken on 31 Aug 2014 at the red carpet for the premiere of "Hungry Hearts" at the Venice Film Festival.
About 6.5 hours of drawing time for this one. I used a similar technique as AD #79 (smoking Adam), which seems to help moves things along quicker. Still not sure I really caught his expression, this was an especially subtle one.
