Ann is so desperate, trying to get through to Henry. She's holding his face, trying to get him to make eye contact, but even with a dark, blurry reference you can see that he's looking down and away, refusing to acknowledge her pleas, too wrapped up in his own hurt to really listen.
This was painted while listening to "Stepping Back in Time" on an endless loop, that beautiful duet Henry sings with the memory of his wife. So full of regret for all the choices he made that led him to this moment, that rash act he can't grab back.
