Every time I paint his mouth I think it can't be that full, and yet it is. Every time.

**SPOILERS and SPECULATION FOR ANNETTE PLOT POINTS AHOY, YE HAVE BEEN WARNED**
(I make no warranty, express or implied, that any of my speculations and musings will in any way shape or form end up being accurate, lol)

We're in the final 2 weeks leading up to the premiere of "Annette" at Cannes, and the promotion team is doing a good job of keeping us fed with new tidbits at regular intervals; this weekend saw Marion in an interview, and the release of a second song from the soundtrack, a passionate and yet wistful duet for Henry and Ann, titled "We Love Each Other So Much." The majority of the song is in a minor key and slow tempo, with a brief foray into a higher relative major and tempo for the bridge, but the overall impression we're left with is one of star-crossed lovers choosing to revel in the overwhelming intensity of their feelings for each other, despite the looming disaster awaiting them.

But, CELLO, you're thinking, this is Henry, with no Ann in sight, talking to Annette; this has nothing to do with that song! Well... let's just say that I suspect this is the moment when Henry is realizing that "We Love Each Other So Much" has now become "We LOVED Each Other So Much."

Poor Henry is trembling, his eyes haunted as he vows to Annette that everything will be alright. We don't know for sure yet when he makes this promise, but I'm guessing that this is just after the tragic events of their ill-fated sea adventure. In all likelihood, Henry has just lost Ann to an accident worsened by his anger and frustration, leaving Annette half orphaned by his hand. He's realizing that it never really will be alright-- how could it?-- but he's determined to try, for his daughter's sake. What's extraordinary is that, for such a stiff expression- his cheeks are straight as a board and he hardly moves his lips at all as he speaks in this little fragment of the scene- Adam still manages to convey a swirling vortex of emotion. Internally, the raging winds of grief, regret, and self-recrimination are howling, but he's clearly expending a huge amount of effort to project this facade of calm about himself so he can reassure his little girl. The only part of his face that gives the violence of his emotions away is his eyes, those windows into the soul, and they are tormented.

I also think that there's an interesting little story being told by the color of his shirt here. Generally, Henry is dressed in green; his home is almost buried by the intense greenery of the surrounding garden, his bathrobe for his performances is green, and so is his motorcycle jacket. Ann, by contrast, wears a vivid red; her hair, her bathing suit, her shirt in the car, and her coat as she's riding the bike behind Henry. Interestingly, Henry is wearing a rusty red shirt both when he's singing "We Love Each Other So Much" and also in this scene, and I am INTRIGUED.

Photo used for reference was a screencap taken by me of the trailer for "Annette".

8-ish hours of drawing time. Painted while listening to "We Love Each Other So Much" on an endless loop; je ne regrette nien. Color magic brought to you by 3 color overlays, 2 color gradient maps, and a lot of layer masking.
