He looks like he just saw a ghost. And maybe he did?
I was THRILLED by the release of the first song from the 'Annette' soundtrack today ("So May We Start", what an absolute BANGER, I had in on repeat ALL DAY); so thrilled that I decided to set aside the next portrait I had tentatively planned, and paint this in celebration instead.
I honestly don't have a lot of thoughts about this one. Ok, I do, but they're kind of random. Things like, I think that's probably Adam's real hair and not a wig (it's the length and cut we saw at all those film festivals in fall 2019 on all those red carpets). And, I wonder who won the face merkin that Leos Carax offered up at that charity auction (at least we know it's not his real facial hair, though I will say they did a good job imitating Adam's actual hair growth pattern). And, what is UP with the color green in this movie, anyway?? Why is the LP green? Why is his jacket green, and the pool lights, and.... it's clearly important somehow, it's too intense and repeated a theme to not be intentional.
But mostly I just really wanted to paint Henry again, and this was a good excuse.
Given the paroxysms of joy I went through in the last 24 hours, I honestly don't know how I'll survive hearing the entire soundtrack, much less seeing the movie in a theater. Atlin has promised to inter me in a fireproof bucket. But if I'm going to melt into a puddle of flammable fangirl goo, at least I will have died happy. So. Very. Happy.
Reference used was a screencap from that bonkers work of genius known as the Cannes trailer for 'Annette'.
About 6 hours of drawing time. Hugely huge thanks to Rad_Braybury for introducing me to the concept of gradient maps, without which this would be monochrome and not nearly as cool.
