When asked for his source of inspiration for this character, Adam immediately cites Saint Peter, the apostle infamous for being plagued with doubt. And doubt Francisco does. He's forever questioning, though the fire of his faith burns steadily throughout.

I've been trying to figure out why, when I much prefer Adam large and fit, I keep coming back to paint so many portraits from this era. I think it's a combination of my attachment to the fiercely gentle heart of the character and the almost fey beauty revealed when the remarkable architecture of Adam's face is this starkly visible.

flypaper_brain left a comment on this work on ao3 with a beautiful insight into not only Francisco, but also the man who plays him, & I wanted to talk about it a little bit:

"So I've been ... thinking about how and why Adam's performances of certain characters --Garupe, Ben Solo, and Dan Jones-- feel so uniquely powerful and authentic to me and I think I figured it out.

These three are fully committed to the paths they've chosen, and yet entirely full of doubt. Portraying intense commitment without the benefit of confidence is a tricky thing, and everything I've ever heard or read Adam say about himself makes me think these particular performances are especially reflective of the actor himself."

Those were the words I was struggling to find all day yesterday, thank you!

We all know Adam's got a healthy dose of creative self-doubt, it comes up in interviews all the time. It's the beautiful and terrible thing about creatives of any kind; we're rarely completely happy with what we've made, forever reaching to be better than we are right now, and questioning the creative choices we make. To then see Adam layer that understanding from his own life onto a character like Father Garupe, well, it's no wonder he strikes a chord.

Photo used as reference was a screenshot taken by me, from "Silence."

About 6.5 hours of drawing time; I let the grain of the background show through and painted most (but not all) of him on one layer.
