Warning: Spoilers for series 3
So, the other day
gealach_ros posted a link to one of the pages at Rohan Stevenson's website with some really cool music available to download. There were "cues" (I'm used to calling them "themes" but whatever) from all 3 series, all previously not available to us music lovers, which was cool. Even more cool was the fact that Mr. Stevenson mentioned that a soundtrack for series 3 isn't ruled out, and they are working on the details.
And so I found myself looking at the contact information on Rohan's page, and thinking, "I should at least mention how much I love the work he does for our show, and toss in a request for that cue I want like burning while I'm at it." So I wrote him this:
Dear Mr. Stevenson,
I wanted to tell you how much I have enjoyed the music that you have composed for the Merlin series, and to mention one piece in particular that I am really hoping to see available someday. Along with all of the other fantastic things in Merlin (great actors/acting, fabulous production values, great locations, and amazing cinematography) the music has been a real treat. I have enjoyed listening to the soundtracks for the first 2 series, and have a request, if I may, for a theme to include in the third. I'm not sure whether it's the work of yourself or Rob Lane, but I *loved* the theme from series 2 where Merlin lays Freya to rest. I was delighted to hear it again in series 3 during "The Sorcerer's Shadow" when Merlin reveals himself as a sorcerer to Gilli. I confess, I re-watched those clips many many many times *just* to enjoy that particular piece of music. Do you think it's possible that someday it will be available? I don't envy anyone the job of having to whittle down the wealth of themes presented in all the episodes, but I do hope that if there were to be a soundtrack for series 3 that the Merlin/Freya theme will be included!
Thank you again for all your hard work; we as viewers really appreciate everything you do to make Merlin an even better show to watch!
Hoping that things work out for a Series 3 soundtrack,
Me
....thinking I would hear from his 'bot with a form response sometime next week. Imagine my insanely huge pleasure of getting a personal response back in less than 2 hours! At some ungodly hour of the morning in Britain, he writes me this:
thankyou for you kind words. there is still hope that a 3rd soundtrack album will be made and i will make sure that the cue mention is included. actually it was not written by either myself or rob, but by the 3rd composer James Gosling. i quite agree it is among the very best of the cues written for the series. he also wrote the wonderful cue used in the labyrinth of gedref from series 1, which originally came from an earlier episode in the series.
i'll pass on your appreciation to james - he'll love it....
rohan
....and then I died. Because how can everyone who works on this show be this nice??? I will die again if it's actually on the soundtrackif when it comes out! :D
