It's a small miracle that we got this glimpse of Adam, dressed as his character Zach in Chris Rock's tentatively titled movie, "Misty Green". Rock ran a very tight, fairly leak-proof shooting ship, somehow managing to keep the paparazzi away from their locations, as well as the crew from sharing too much of what was going on.
One very discreet exception was the lovely Nelson George, who consistently shared tiny video snippets expressing his excitement and enthusiasm for the goings-on of the day. One such video, with Nelson talking about how they'd been doing night-shoots for 3 days straight, had Adam and Chris having quiet conversation out of frame, with Adam's distinctive laugh welling up over the murmur.
The other, less discreet, exception was Busta Rhymes, who was tickled pink to get to shake hands with a similarly pleased-looking Adam, and who couldn't help sharing the moment with the world. Thus was the grainy, oddly lit, jaggy and pretty potato reference for this painting born.
It's so potato, in fact, that there's been a lively debate about whether this Very Short Haircut is, indeed, his very own hair, shorn the shortest we've seen for nearly 15 years, or a wig. Given that Adam's "wig guy" Alexis seems to still be in Barcelona, and that his last character— Gary, in "Paper Tiger"— had hair only a couple of inches longer, I'm betting that he really did cut it.
But it seems we'll have to wait for that confirmation, if it ever comes.
As I'm writing this, we are hoping against hope that Adam will appear on the red carpet at the 2025 Venice Film Festival for the premiere of "Father Mother Sister Brother"; the official celebrity arrival sheet doesn't have him listed at all, and he was also not mentioned, or present, at press this morning, and, most tellingly of all, akgroomer hasn't been sharing travel photos. I don't think he's going to show.
It's a shame, we'd have loved to see what look he's sporting now (goatee, clean-shaven, or stubble? My bet was on several days of stubble), and to see him push the bounds of fashion with yet another black tux (would he have had black buttons on the shirt again?) and be so cool in his shades that he's practically wisping with steam, like dry ice.
The decision by the Cannes Film Festival to not to pick up FMSB meant that we missed our hoped for feast this May. The announcement of FMSB being premiered at Venice meant we tightened our belts as we nibbled eagerly at the surprisingly generous crumbs given to us by the occasionally overly aggressive pap presence at the sets for "Paper Tiger", but what we were really looking forward was the main course we hoped to be served today.
Not to put too fine a point on it, the Rats are starving.
But, with the wrap of his second film of the summer only three days ago, as well as that film requiring him to be away from home for most of the month, school starting up for his older child next week, and the festival well attended by the other cast members, Adam seems to have made the very reasonable decision to sit this one out, choosing instead to spend the time with his family at home.
An apt choice for a movie about the awkward estrangement that can develop between parents and their children.
It's a good time to tap the sign which reads, "Actors don't owe us public appearances", and to practice releasing our sense of entitlement. Adam doesn't get paid to do promotion, and time spent with his children while they're small is an ephemeral coin all too easily frittered away.
There will be other crumbs to tide us over. We got our first glimpses of him as Jeff in the FMSB trailer yesterday; given that it's the centerpiece of this year's NYFF there's a chance we might get to see him on that red carpet in October, or, if we're really lucky. maybe even a little bit of late night show promotion (this would be a great year to give him his SNL 5-timers robe, Lorne!). And there's a good chance we'll get tidbits while he's filming for "The Dealer" this fall, since it's set in NYC. We've gone through longer, leaner times before. And so, in the meantime, even though the Rats are starving, the potato will do.Bon appétit!

About 17 hours of painting time. There's two versions, one is sepia monochrome, and the other is what I've dubbed "sodium lamp" since it reminds me of the yellow glow of the streetlights of my childhood. Painting from a reference this oddly lit, and low quality as a result, was a fun challenge, and I am always fascinated by what details on his face catch the digital attention of the camera. Many of what are normally his more prominent moles are hidden by the pose and the angle of the lighting, but the one right in front of his left ear stands out, as well as several of his neckles. It'll be interesting to see if the hard shine on his hair is due to the camera's struggles or a truly staggering amount of hair gel.
