The house lights had just come up after the screening of "Megalopolis" at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, the obligatory standing ovation was in progress, and the camera crew had progressed to the uncomfortably long closeups of each of the principal cast members. It's a part of the ritual of a screening at Cannes that always makes Adam visibly uncomfortable, and that discomfort sometimes spurs him into spontaneous actions meant to break the tension, such as when he took Leos Carax up on his offer of a cigarette during the applause after "Annette."
This year, after briefly looking directly into the lens and then away to wave at the audience surrounding him, Adam glanced back at the camera that was still invading his personal space, then reached out and turned it away to focus on Francis Ford Coppola, who was standing right next to him. You can see the moment the idea pops into his head, an impish gleam lighting up his eyes and his mouth quirking with quiet amusement a fraction of a second before he makes his move; I managed to get a screenshot of him just as he'd raised his arms to put his plan into action.
This particular amused expression is very subtle, without a lot of external clues; his lower eyelids are tightly pursed, making deep crescent shadows right under his eyes, but the rest of his smile lines, crinkles, and dimples are all quiescent. The corners of his mouth are actually tipped down, but his lower lip is rolled inward just a touch; it's clear that what he's doing is suppressing a grin in an effort not to give away that he's about to do something a little bit naughty.
The reference for this one was a lightly edited version of the highest res screencap I could take of the recording broadcast from inside Rang 1 on 16 May 2024 after the conclusion of the premiere of "Megalopolis" at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
10 hours of painting time; for all that I did my best to get a good quality screencap, this was a moment where Adam was in motion in front of a video camera, and the resulting reference was consequently pretty blurry. This meant that while I wasn't fussing about individual crinkles or stubble hairs, I was dealing with how to render the blur while still making sure this was an image that would read correctly, which is it's own kind of challenge, especially when things like eyebrows, eyelids, lip margins, and even chins are more like suggestions than anything clearly delineated.
