I've written about what a promotional marathon the fall 2019 film festival circuit was for Adam before, but what really is remarkable is just how little he lets it show. I'm sure that's due to a combination of life experiences (his time in the Marines as well as grueling shooting schedules), really excellent grooming (Amy Komorowski is a master at her craft!), and his prodigious talent as an actor. For all that he professed to Annette Benning, "I'm WIPED," when he replied to her greeting asking how he was doing, very little of that exhaustion shows here. He is, as always, very neatly turned out (barring the length of his stubble, which looks 4 -5 days long,) his gaze is alert and focused, and his expression is neutral, trending toward a smile, but there's a tension to it.
Adam is very lean, the leanest we've ever seen him; he was in the midst of playing Henry in "Annette" and had filmed the Burberry Hero ad only 3 weeks before this, leaving only a very thin layer of subcutaneous fat over the muscles of his face, giving us a clearer view of when they're engaged. Most of them are relaxed; his brow is unrumpled, the fine webbing on his cheeks is just his ever deepening crow's feet waiting quietly to crinkle, and the nascent smile on his lips is only just beginning to bloom, which means that his dimples are dormant. But look at the line of his jaw; usually it's straight as a ruler, describing a beautifully crisp line back up to the hinge by his ear, but that line is interrupted by the bulge of his masseter muscle, which is clenching his jaw tightly shut. You can even see some smaller muscles up under his cheekbone getting into the action a bit, making subtle undulations under the skin.
It's probably just that he was caught holding his eponymous piece of gum between his back teeth (I strongly suspect nicotine gum, given how much he was smoking as Henry, and the fact that he wouldn't have been able to have a cigarette at this event); he's usually pretty subtle about it, and does his best not to chew too aggressively in front of the cameras while posing for photos, but he's nearly always got a piece of gum in his mouth, sometimes even while filming. It's a combination of the pose, the fact that there are no dimples to distract us, and how lean he is that makes the tension in his jaw so obvious; had he been in his Clyde Logan era, smiling, and facing the camera, we'd probably have been none the wiser.

About 35 hrs of painting time. I got caught up in rendering the very fine texture details of his skin, as well as those glorious eyebrow hairs & his stubble. He's got a mole on his septum that I hadn't noticed before, and I do love how his dimples have made fine creases in his cheeks that persist even when he's wearing a more serious face, to go along with those beautiful crow's feet crinkles.
