At the time of this writing, I have read the original novel by Don DeLillo, but have not yet gotten to see more than the preview trailer released by Netflix just before the first public screening of "White Noise" at the 79th Venice Film Festival. I'm delighted that this movie is also opening the 2022 NYFF, and that Adam and the rest of the cast are expected to be present, most especially because that ALSO happens to be my birthday, and I'm gleefully anticipating new references of my favorite redwood, which is the best birthday present for this little Rat artist, ever.

All of which is to say, I can guess the context of this particular snippet of that trailer, but I don't know for sure just yet. And that there will be a bit of a spoilery discussion about what this scene might be.

**POTENTIAL WHITE NOISE SPOILERS AHOY**

If you want to read the excerpt from the book that I think this scene is from, it's the last couple of pages in chapter 6.

Yet again, Adam is playing a character who is playing a character; he did it in "Girls" several times as Sackler in various plays, as Kylo Ren layered over Ben Solo, and most notably as Flip Zimmerman in "BlacKkKlansman" pretending to be Ron Stallsworth.

Every year, just as classes are starting, Jack hosts a special screening for his most advanced students of a collection of background footage, as a way to introduce them to the material they'll be working with during the class. He conducts this screening with his trademark professorial gravitas, dressed in his black academic robes and wearing his tinted glasses and a very serious expression, introducing those students to the character of "Professor Gladney" that he wears in the classroom; Jack doesn't need glasses, and prefers brightly colored and garishly patterned shirts when not on campus.

And part of the act that Adam as Jack is playing is this dark intensity that we're seeing here; Jack as himself is a hopeless simp for his wife, and a devoted, if somewhat hapless and sarcastic, dad to a blended gaggle of children. But in this moment, we can see the focused serious intensity he brings to his role as Professor; his forehead is slightly rumpled, brows knit in concentration over eyes that are laser-focused on the screen in front of him. Most of his face is hidden by that massive hand, but the tiny corner of his mouth that's visible is turned slightly down, his cheek slack. We know his chin is tucked a bit because we can see the rumples of his double chin, and his head is tilted down so he can peer over the top rim of his tinted glasses. It's an intimidating stare, one that anybody would find uncomfortable if it were turned on them.

But I'm guessing he's settling into his first performance of the school year as J.A.K. Gladney, and that this stare is fixed on the screen showing his presentation.

Photo used for reference was a screencap of the "White Noise" preview trailer taken by me.

About 11.5 hours of painting time, of which at least 2 hours were setting up the one color gradient map for his skin tones, the saturation adjustment for those tones, 7 color overlay layers, and another for the color in his irises. Totally worth it, the colors in this movie are going to knock my fucking socks OFF.
