I've been saving this one for an emotional rainy day, and, after the month I've just had, I really needed to paint my favorite actor caught in a moment of pure joy. I can't tell you how often I found myself grinning back at him, inanely, as though this painting of him might see me beaming in response to his own megawatt smile, but it really is infectious, in the best kind of way.
Adam has a habit of tucking his chin when he laughs, forming that adorable double chin; bracketed by the curving lines of his dimpled smile, we get to see it even when he's at his leanest because it's just the thickness of his skin, folded a bit by the motion of his chin. At this point in time he wasn't extremely lean, nor was he in a Lorge Man phase, but his normally razor sharp jaw is less in evidence than usual, and I think that's because he's been caught mid-chuckle.
When we laugh or speak, the muscles involved pull on a small, u-shaped bone, the hyoid, that lies under the jaw, nestled just in front of the epiglottis. It's the only truly floating bone in the body, tethered in place solely by the ligaments of the muscles attached to it. The anchor for the muscle of the tongue as well as those that control the movement of the larynx, the hyoid bone is critical in the process of swallowing and producing speech. And when we laugh, the muscles in the throat thicken as they tug on it, which is what I think we're seeing here. It explains the fullness under his chin, and the fact that his Adam's apple is less prominent than usual, having bobbed down to the level of that large mole near the front of his neck.

About 20.5 hrs of drawing time, just the stubble took me nearly 2.5 hours. He has a very distinctive hair growth pattern, and when his stubble is this length there's no way to take a shortcut that will do them justice, so each of them had to be painted individually.
