He's her knight in shining, sweaty, shirtless armor.

This beautiful little moment comes right at the end of s2, after Adam and Hannah have spent the entire season separated, figuring out what they want and need in a relationship, and being frustrated by the choices they've made along the way. For all that Adam had previously had a very open handed approach ("These things have expiration dates; 6 months or until someone stops having fun"), when Hannah dumps him he finds that he's the one who can't let go. He's thrown for an angst-, and terrible breakup-themed-youtube-album-, filled loop, only reconciling himself to the idea once she accidentally gets him arrested. He eventually falls into a rebound relationship with another woman who, it turns out, needs very different things in the bedroom than Adam does, and who very clearly thinks there's something wrong with him for wanting what he wants.

Frustrated and shamed by his increasingly obvious disconnect with Natalia, Adam impulsively takes his aggression out on the carpentry project that's consumed his time for the past few months, beating it to bits with an improvised bat. It's in the midst of this whirlwind of self-hating destruction that Hannah reaches out to Adam in a last ditch, desperate attempt to find someone, anyone, to help her during a mental health crisis. He's the only one of her circle of friends and family who actually answers her call for help, and the harsh edge of his rage immediately softens as soon as he sees it's her. He realizes that she's suffering an intense relapse of her OCD, her anxiety spiraling, and insists on coming over right away, refusing to be put off despite her half-hearted protests.

Cue the montage of Adam sprinting shirtless through Brooklyn to be there for Hannah when she needs him the most, literally breaking through the barrier that she's put up between them when he kicks in the door, hurdling over the furniture. But when he finally reaches her room, he slows, pauses for a beat, and then ever so very gently pulls the comforter from over her head, quietly gazing down into Hannah's eyes as he tries to catch his breath. He doesn't care that she's snotty from crying, compulsively twitching, and has a terrible haircut; you can see from the look in his eyes that he's just happy to be there with her, that she called him for help, and he could answer.

He looks so relieved and hopeful, his brow completely smooth, eyes wide, a small smile curling his open mouth, tongue pressed up against his teeth. His dimples are rumpled from a combination of that smile and the fact that he's tucked his chin so that he can lock eyes with Hannah while standing tall so his chest has freedom to fill with great heaving breaths. And when she hoarsely whispers, "You're here," he crinkles his eyes a little, takes another deep breath, and replies, half in jest, "Well, I was always here."

Because he was; all she had to do was ask.

Photo used for reference was a screencap of episode 2.10 of Girls, taken and edited by me.

About 9.5 hours of painting time. I did this one to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the premiere of "Girls" on HBO. Happy Sacklerversay, Driver Hive!
