This is a man who is fucking freezing, pretending to be Not Freezing While Being Heroic on a Horse Half Naked.

And, to be fair, he succeeded; I only started to wonder a bit when I couldn't find a good explanation for the rumples on his chin. At first, second, and third glance this seems to be a pretty straightforward heroic pose for Adam; strong, yet emotionally vulnerable, shoulders down, head up and turned to the right, eyes gazing at the horizon, mouth soft, but jaw set resolutely. Complicated but relatable.

What's also relatable are the subtle signs of how cold he must have been. The angle of the light reveals that the tiny muscles in Adam's chin have rumpled the skin, the way they would if his chin were wobbling as he fought back tears (think Charlie Barber reading that letter), but he's clearly not weepy. And despite that soft set to his lips (slightly pursed, almost as if they're on the verge of parting) his teeth are clenched; you can see the bulge of his jaw muscle running down from his cheekbone. It's the kind of thing you might do if you were trying to keep your teeth from chattering, and it would explain the wobbly chin rumples. Given that he's shirtless after having gone swimming in the very early morning on a beach in the Canary Islands in mid-September, I think it would be reasonable to guess that he might have been more than a little chilly in the sea breeze.

Hopefully they had a warm blanket ready for him as soon as they were done, he'd earned it!

Photo used for reference was a behind the scenes outtake by Mario Soretti from the August 2021 Burberry Hero ad campaign.

You will have noticed that I have, once again, not painted the Sacred Tits, which were on full, glorious, taut-nippled display in the reference photo. And it is, once again, because I wanted to appreciate the expression on his face without being blinded by those beautiful headlights. After seeing Adam play the villain that is Jacques Le Gris, I really needed to paint him being heroic. Even if it was just for a cologne ad, and he was actually freezing those lovely tits off.

12-ish hours of drawing time. That hair was a real challenge! Most of the texture in the skin is actually the grain of the background showing through. Instead of my usual black silhouette, I went for a technique that's most like working in charcoal on toned paper; the canvas being the mid-tone, and I added white and black on the layer above for the highlights and shadows.
