It was like Flip Zimmerman did Venice with a side part.

If you'd asked me, 3 months ago, what my favorite look on Adam is, I'd have waffled (a lot!). I genuinely love all of the looks he's had over the years, all for different reasons, and yes, this includes when you can see his ears, every variation of facial hair from clean-shaven to Jesuit priest, when he was whipcord lean for Henry and also when he was more than a bit soft around the middle for Jack Gladney.

And if you'd asked me what I hoped we might see if Adam were to do promo at this Venice this year, I'd have said, after much thought; a full mane almost down to the collar, like he had for Flip and for young Jacques, wearing his trademark "I'm on a break" goatee, and just a hint of a double chin.

Reader, I must be doing something right, because that's exactly what we got. And I discovered that I do, in fact, have a favorite look on him, and it's THIS. Alas, my favorite look is what happens when this man goes on a 5 month parental leave hiatus, disappearing from the public eye entirely for as much as 3 months at a go. But honestly, it was worth the wait!

Smiling, greeting photographers he knew like they were friends he'd missed, the awkward sasquatch we usually see at events like this was only evidenced by Adam's trademark lumbering gait. Well. That, and the impressively wrinkled hem of his linen shirt, which must have started off the day tucked in (it's ok, he made up for it with that immaculately tailored tux on the red carpet).

Wearing an expression as soft and open as the collar of his linen shirt, it's clear that Adam spent some time outside this summer, his skin tone warmed a couple of degrees by a touch of sun, especially compared to how pale he was at Venice in 2022. His crow's feet had established a permanent, if still faint, presence on the crest of his cheekbones, much like the lines carved by his dimples, and he'd grown a couple of silver hairs on his chin to go with the gleams at his temples.

He was doing that thing where he wears a smile small enough to fold the skin at the corners of his mouth, but leave the dimples quiet; his lips pressed gently together, the ends of his upper lip tipped down, echoing the hooded slant of his upper eyelids. The warmth in his gaze comes from a series of tiny muscles tightened around his eyes; Adam's lower eyelids were pursed upwards a bit, crinkling just at the corners of his eyes and the underside of the outer edge of his eyebrows.

It was a joy all unto itself just to see Adam again after such a long hiatus. To see him looking so happy, healthy, and settled in himself was another joy, and the cherry on top of the jubilant cake was that he seemed to be eager to be able to be there promoting this film.

Photo used for reference was taken by Piermarco Menini on 31 Aug 2023 at the Venice Film Festival press conference photocall for "Ferrari."

About 24.5 hrs of painting time. Ideally, I would have liked to have gotten more definition in the texture of that linen shirt, but to do so I would have needed to spend a truly bananapants amount of time on it, and so I decided softly suggesting that texture would just have to be good enough.
