Our king of meme-able expressions strikes again.
For FlowerOfCarrots, who asked nicely.
You've heard of crack fic? This is crack art. And it was good craic to paint! I had SO much fun with this one, especially in it's completely horrifying early stages. Zombieland is awkward at the best of times, but it turns out that it's hilariously awful when he's wearing an expression like this. I've included it in the series because this is, indeed, a portrait of Adam VERY much as himself, but is in no way intended as a serious work. The exact opposite, in fact.
Venice was, as always, a gift. I don't know what it is about European film festivals that brings out the best in our brooding hillock, but who really cares? He looked amazing, and was clearly relaxed and having a good time. There was the photocall with the sexiest black polo shirt ever, the moment where his beautifully large hands made a perfectly normal sized cup of coffee look tiny, the press conference where Adam got a fit of the giggles and proceeded to give us the gift of a series of expressions that launched a thousand memes, and then this utterly classic black tux for the red carpet. I really do have a veritable mountain of references of him giving us his full, crinkly eyed smile to choose from, and yet, I picked this one.
Adam was signing autographs along the edge of the red carpet, dressed to the neatest of nines in this impeccable tux, being photographed by everyone with a phone that was in arm's reach, including Adam, who was taking his signature grandpa selfies with folks, and taking the time to be sure to get to sections of the barriers that other celebrities hadn't visited. Most of those photos are of him smiling, but the poor person who captured this one managed to catch him in a fraction of a moment where he's wearing an expression that, as a friend of mine said, looks like he's been offered an h'orderves covered in aspic.
It's just so perfectly skeptical that I can't help but laugh every time I see it. I have no idea what exactly prompted this expression, but you KNOW, without a doubt, that whatever it was, he didn't really want it. Bless him and his extraordinarily mobile face.
I'm sure he made up for it with a proper smile and an autograph.
Photo used for reference was taken by an unknown fan who was at the red carpet for the premiere of "White Noise" at the 79th Venice FF on 31 Aug 2022. It was actually a screencap of the photo, taken by the fan themselves, of the picture in their photo album, and the original is almost certainly deleted. It's a shame they didn't share the actual photo, I could maybe have gotten some more detail out of it (it's marked "hdr" in the screencap), but I made do. Thank you to whoever you are, it's awful and hilarious and we love it. And thank you, Carrots, for demanding that I paint THIS ONE, because it was a fuck ton of fun.
About 8 hrs of painting time. It's smaller and blurrier than a lot of the pieces in this series, simply due to the fact that the reference was of such low quality, but after the painstaking details of the last couple of portraits, it was great to be able to let that go and simply concentrate on this nearly indescribable, completely hilarious expression. I can only hope that, if Adam ever finds this, that the previous 106 portraits in this series make it clear how deep my respect and admiration is for him. Fun fact, I used the same overlays for this as I did for my first Jack Gladney portrait (the one that google is, hilariously, using as the key image descriptor for the character when you search for him. I'm honored and deeply amused). It seemed apt.
