I'm guessing that they told him he had to be there, but I'm also guessing nobody ever said he had to look happy about it.
Adam isn't frowning, per se, but he's not smiling, either. His forehead is smooth, but his brow is faintly rumpled, cheeks utterly unlined by any trace of amusement, his lips pressed gently together. Looking down on him from slightly above like this lets us appreciate the whorl of his center part, which remains stubbornly present despite every groomer's best efforts, as well as giving us a fantastic view down the keel of his nose, leading our eyes down to the point of his narrow chin, up along the beautiful slope of his jaw, and back across the breadth of his cheekbones, the stark lighting of the flash bringing out details like some of the small scars on his cheeks.
While comfortably resplendent in his entirely obsidian attire, Adam didn't exactly look pleased to be attending the Autumn/Winter 2022 fashion show for Burberry in London. But since he's the face of Burberry's newest fragrance, I expect he'd been asked to attend their first fashion show after two years of pandemic lockdown, as a part of his ongoing commitment to promoting the brand. He had to have been tired though; just the night before, he and Joanne had hosted an exhibition of art made by two of their friends at a gallery in New York, which means he hopped on a red-eye flight straight afterwards. Photos taken at that event show Adam wearing a very similar version of this outfit, and an affably amused expression.
That affability was notably absent in London, however. He was wearing his resting Hades face in every photo and video clip I've seen taken during the event, even during the whopping 5 seconds he gave the photographers to take their official photos of him. I have mad respect for the fact that he didn't bother to pretend to be having a good time; he wasn't rude, but he wasn't faux effusive, either. He just stood there, carefully expressionless, while everything whirled on around him.
And, heaven help me, I was just glad to see him, even if he wasn't in the mood to smile.
Photo used for reference was taken by Richard Gianorio at the Burberry Autumn/Winter 2022 fashion show on 11 Mar 2022 in London, with thanks to AdamDriverCentl on twitter for sharing it with us, and everyone on my twitter TL who poked me to make sure I found it.
About 10 hours of painting time, which seems ridiculous, but that's what it needed.
If you'd like to see two other paintings based on this same reference made by other artists, SpaceHeck and PangeaStarSeed both did their own brilliant versions in what we dubbed the THREE cakes game, which are posted on twitter!
