Rick Smolan #2 {art}

A friend, indeed.

He's going to find a way to help her that respects what she wants, while still giving her the help she needs, and he's not going to let her chase him away.

By this point in the journey, Rick knows Robyn is strong, intelligent, capable, stubborn, and that her "problem with people" isn't necessarily personal; she just genuinely prefers solitude. It's the first time we hear him say it out loud, though, and she acknowledges the fact with a cute scrunch of her nose and no apology whatsoever.

Robyn is planning the next stage of her journey, which will take her on a two month trek through the driest, loneliest stretch of her long journey. Buoyed with confidence from her success so far, she's dismissive of the need to travel with another person, but Rick is worried enough to confront her about it. You can see the concern in his face in the way his brow is scrunched, the muscles around his eyes tight, narrowing them. He knows she's almost certainly going to refuse, no matter what he says, but he still tries. His chin is lifted in mild defiance as he gazes down his nose in speculation, carefully considering how to phrase his statement in the hopes that he might possibly convince her to allow Mr. Eddy, an aboriginal elder, to go with her.

When she still won't relent, Rick counters with a different way to help; he'll make a thousand mile detour, driving ahead along her intended route, and leave drums of water at specific locations, just in case she can't find any on her own. It's a brilliant compromise, alleviating Rick's anxiety about the extreme scarcity of water in this part of the desert while still respecting Robyn's need for solitude, and she is sincerely grateful to accept his offer.

It's a beautiful little scene, quiet and understated like so much of the film, even though it's full of conflict, and they both end up walking away with a deeper understanding, and trust, of each other.

Photo used for reference was a screencap of "Tracks" taken and shared by the very generous and talented vanshots on twitter.

About 10.5 hours of painting time. I briefly considered doing this one in color, especially since Adam was in green, but chose not to for simplicity's sake. I've done a lot of color work recently, and wanted to just play in the monochrome box for a bit.
