Adam Driver #84 (VMan 2015)
A study in duality, confidence in vulnerability. An apt metaphor for Adam's approach to acting, come to think of it.
Also this is absolutely the purest neck porn I've ever painted. I thought it was hair porn, or profile porn, but no. It's neck porn. Enjoy!
For all the times that I've painted Adam bearded, and have painted his profile, don't think I've ever painted a bearded profile of him. We get to appreciate how far down his neck the soft ruffles of his beard extend, stopping just at the prominence of his Adam's apple. His expression is so very calm; he's gazing down the prow of his nose with nary a rumpled brow nor dimpled cheek, the delicate creases on his eyelid the only folds visible, and his mouth is relaxed, lips just touching without pressing together. What tension we do see is in the long column of his neck, the taut tendons and tender veins framing the architecture of his throat as he tilts his chin up. He's got a gentle hold on the coat, and the overall impression I'm left with is playful confidence.
Exposing one's neck like this is an exercise in vulnerability; when threatened or unsure, humans will lower their chins, tucking them close to their necks in an unconscious defensive instinct. Here, Adam is doing the exact opposite, displaying the delicate structures in the column of his throat the way a relaxed cat might show it's belly, stretched out in complete confidence that his trust won't be betrayed.
That confident vulnerability, a willingness to set aside any expectations he might have had, or assumptions he might have made, to explore all of the possibilities in a scene, is a trademark of his work as an actor, and it's what I think he's talking about when he mentions "emotional availability." Despite mentioning it on multiple occasions, Adam has never really given interviewers a definition, but it's certainly a quality he's said he values in a scene partner, one that he praises others for repeatedly.
And it's clearly an ideal he pursues for himself, in any professional setting, whether that's filming a movie, or posing for a photoshoot.
Photo used for reference was taken by Inez & Vinoodh for the Spring/Summer 2015 edition of VMan.
Probably about 6 hours of work for this one. Maybe more. Probably, ok, almost definitely more. At some point I got lost in trying to get those pin-tucks to behave, so it might even be more like 7 hours.
